  1. Let me present to the reader a piece that might pass for a Norman Rockwell painting, only in words. Perhaps it is one of his many Christmas scenes, for there is snow on the ground in this vignette, and the reader doesn't have to know that it happened in North Carolina, where blue moons are more plentiful than white Christmases. The central figures are a young girl, tall and skinny, and a dog; short and broad and dark, and altogether the sort of animal you might expect to meet in a trash-lined alley of the inner city. This dog (with really horrible glaring red eyes), has a hold on the seat of the girl's pants, which are giving way under the strain, while their occupant is twisting round to face her assailant with a most alarmed expression. And here we have the upper hand of the painter, who would find it difficult to convey to us that these beleaguered drawers are the pride and joy of their owner; the signal, in fact, of her first entrance into the fashionable world. Note the moral. How suddenly and completely are the vanities of this life torn down! Literally, sometimes, like jeans in the teeth of the neighbor's dog. Miss Leah B.
